Erosion that reads as your fault

Concentrated roof runoff carries the fines out from under a paver base. Nothing is visible while it happens. Then the surface dips, and the client calls the person who laid it.

Planting that will not establish

A bed sitting under an unguttered roofline gets scoured every storm. New plantings do not stand a chance and the replacements do not either.

Downspouts pointed at your work

Where a gutter already exists, the discharge is frequently aimed straight at the patio or the bed. Collecting the water is only half a system.

A drainage scope you do not want to own

Roof drainage sits at the boundary of your trade. Taking it on stretches your licence and your crew. Ignoring it means your work keeps failing for reasons outside your control.

Arizona licences are classification-specific. Ask for the number and the classification, not just the number, and check it at roc.az.gov. A residential-only sheet metal classification (R-45) does not authorise commercial work.

Questions

Can you come in before we lay hardscape?

That is the ideal sequence and it is much cheaper for everyone. Getting the drain line in before the pavers go down beats trenching through finished work.

Do you bill us or the homeowner?

Either. Some partners want us invisible and billing through them; others want a direct relationship with the client. Your call.

The client says they do not want gutters. Now what?

Then the drainage conversation matters more, not less. Sometimes the answer is grading and a French drain and no gutters at all. We would rather solve it than sell a gutter.

Is Arizona soil really the problem?

It contributes. Ground that has been bone dry for months does not absorb a sudden monsoon dump — it sheds it. The water runs along the surface to the same low point every storm, and that low point is usually something you built.
