Historic districts, and everywhere else

In the central historic districts — Willo, Encanto, Coronado, Roosevelt — we are often working on homes from the 1920s to 1940s with real architectural character and, frequently, original wood fascia. Appearance matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Valley, which is exactly why we hand-cut and strip-miter corners rather than snapping in a pre-formed box miter. On a period home the difference between a clean mitered corner and a bulky factory one is genuinely visible from the street.

These homes also tend to have narrower eaves than the newer stuff, which means roof water lands closer to the foundation with nothing to slow it down. The damage tends to show up as staining low on the stucco and soil erosion tight against the wall.

North Phoenix, Ahwatukee and the newer areas are a different job: tile roofs, larger roof areas, longer runs, and a real case for six-inch gutters where a lot of roof drains toward a single run. Flat and low-slope roofs with parapet walls are also common across parts of Phoenix, and those need scuppers and overflow provisions rather than conventional gutters.

Phoenix questions

I have a historic home in central Phoenix. Will gutters look wrong on it?

Not if they are done properly. The things that make gutters look bad on a period home are bulky factory corners, visible seams, mismatched colour and oversized profile. Hand-cut corners, a seamless run and a colour matched to your trim reads as though it belongs. We are happy to talk through profile choice before you commit.

My house has a flat roof with a parapet wall. Do I need gutters?

Probably not conventional gutters. Low-slope roofs with parapets drain through scuppers, and code requires overflow provisions so a blocked primary drain cannot pond water on the roof. That is different work and we are licensed for it.

Do I need five inch or six inch?

On larger north Phoenix roofs with long runs and a lot of area draining to one place, six inch is often the right call. On a smaller central-Phoenix home, five inch is usually plenty. We size it to your roof rather than defaulting.
