Downspout to drain line in Surprise
Gutters were installed, the roof water is being collected properly, and the yard still floods. That is because collecting the water and disposing of it are two different jobs.
What is actually going on
A gutter takes water spread along a whole roofline and concentrates it into a few downspouts. If those downspouts discharge at the base of the wall, the problem has been focused rather than fixed — several times the volume now arrives at one point.
On the flatter lots common through Surprise and the West Valley, there is often not enough natural fall to carry that water away on the surface.
The result is a persistent wet area, water tracking back toward the slab, and landscaping that will not establish because it is periodically drowned.
How we work it out
Diagnosis before quote.
Establish where the water goes after the downspout, not just whether gutters exist.
Look for the low point. Water finds the same one every storm, and it will be obvious after any real rain.
Work out whether there is a viable outlet — somewhere the water can be released without simply becoming someone else’s problem.
How we approach it
- Buried drain line taking downspout discharge to a controlled outlet, away from the structure and away from hardscape.
- French drain where the issue is a saturated area or subsurface water rather than a single discharge point.
- Downspout placement reconsidered where it makes the run to the outlet shorter or simpler.
- Rain tank where it makes sense to capture the water for landscape use instead of just moving it.
What to watch for in any quote
Including ours. These are the things worth asking about:
- Downspouts releasing within a few feet of the foundation
- A patch of yard that stays wet for days after everything else has dried
- Splash blocks doing the job a drain line should be doing
- Any gutter quote that stops at the downspout and never mentions where the water goes
