Tile-roof installation in Scottsdale
Concrete and clay tile is the Scottsdale default, and it changes how the gutter attaches, how the water arrives, and how much the finished line matters.
What is actually going on
Tile does not shed water the way shingle does. It arrives at the edge faster and with more concentration through the pan courses, which affects both gutter sizing and where the water actually lands in the trough.
The attachment is also different. Tile roofs frequently have a raised edge condition, and getting the gutter positioned to catch the water without fouling the tile takes more care than a shingle edge.
In Scottsdale there is a third factor that is not technical at all: appearance is part of the specification. HOA guidelines, custom elevations and homeowners who notice detail.
How we work it out
Diagnosis before quote.
We look at how much roof area drains toward each intended run. Large tile roofs with long runs often justify six-inch rather than five-inch.
We check the edge condition and the fascia behind it before committing to a hanger approach.
We ask about HOA requirements early, because colour and profile approval is easier to handle before fabrication than after.
How we approach it
- Size to the roof rather than to a default. Six-inch where the area and pitch justify it.
- Colour matched to fascia or trim. A six-inch profile covers more fascia and reads closer to trim, which on some elevations is the better look as well as the better capacity.
- Hand-cut, strip-mitered corners. On a custom Scottsdale elevation the difference between a clean mitered corner and a bulky snap-in box miter is visible from the street.
- Plan the discharge. These properties usually have pool surrounds, hardscape and designed planting directly below the roofline, all expensive to have washed out.
What to watch for in any quote
Including ours. These are the things worth asking about:
- An installer who quotes five-inch on a large tile roof without discussing capacity
- Pre-formed box miters on a home where the detail will be seen
- No conversation about where the downspout water ends up
- HOA submittal left until after the material is ordered
